Puerperal depression was the term we discussed about yesterday, mainly about its signs and how does it manifest. Today we will see that how can it get cured. All biological, social and psychological causes are responsible for this mental instability.
As far as the treatment is concerned both medicines as well as psychotherapy and behaviour therapy play a pivotal role. Medicines like amitryptiline, nortryptiline, fluoxetine and imipramine are helpful. Psychotherapy is in the form of interpersonal therapy which mainly helps to subside the womans doubt and also targets the family members especially the spouses. many patients get relieved of their ailment just by the counselling and the mothers who were on drugs should be careful when doing switch over from drugs as when they breastfeed these drugs get secreted in milk.
Always remember that you should show your empathy towards the patient as she is undergoing through a low phase and your love helps her to get out of puerperal depression.

puerperal depression- come out of it-1
Puerperal depression is one process many of the just delivered females go through and tackle with.I was also one of them. before telling my experience , let us know about this term in brief.
The term ' puerperal depression' refers to the severe form of depression ( or may be elation) occuring in first few weeks after baby birth. To be more time specific, with in six weeks as this is the period puerperium word refers to. Puerperial depression is also known as postpartum psychosis. The major symptoms are fluctuating moods, acute state of confusion and disordered thinking. Also there are delusions, hallucinations , decreased appetite and sleep. The patient loses interest in the surroundings. As a result these all problems lead to social and personal dysfunctioning. As far as the behaviour towads the baby is concerned, the affected mother looses interest in the baby and becomes hostile. This disorder has to be very cautiously differentiated from postnatal depression.
In my next blog , we will discuss the treatment and my personal experience of Puerperal depression.
